Abe Opperman Gallery
Abe Opperman has a distinctive art style, lively and whimsical in its energy and beauty, and he has galleries in both Cape Town and Johannesburg. His childhood consisted of the large open spaces typical of farm life, filled with dramatic vistas of mountains and orchids grown by his own hand.
Having been born in the Free State, this South African artist did not always pursue his now chosen career path. While working as a florist, he decided to exhibit some of his work during 2010 in his shop at the time and things simply grew from there. As the years have progressed, he has taken inspiration not only from the gorgeous landscapes of his life but also music and people who have impacted on his life.
This contemporary Cape Town gallery can be found in the quaint district of De Waterkant, close to iconic settings such as the V&A Waterfront, the Cape Town Stadium and the magisterial grandeur of Table Mountain. Its interior is crisp, modern and bright, mirroring its celebrated sister gallery in Johannesburg, which doubles up as the artist’s flower and interior shop going by the name of Hoy P’Loy.
Exhibitions change every 6 months, with Opperman’s works exclusively adorning the walls. His craft is unmistakeably his own, with intimate pieces containing bold subjects that can almost be seen as shadows stretching across starker backgrounds. In his own words, “For me, art is about sharing a personal experience”.
